At the Aesthetic Derma clinic, Dr Nikolaidou combines medical and cosmetic dermatology to address certain skin concerns, hypertrophic scars. Hypertrophic scars can be treated with various methods including cortisone injections or microneedling. Our experienced doctor will guide you on the most appropriate treatment for you, according to your needs.

Prior to the treatment

Our experienced doctor will identify the areas that require treatment. The skin will be thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the procedure.

During the Treatment

Depending on the procedure, the doctor will either apply a series of small cortisone injections on the scar or perform microneedling. With regard to cortisone injections, the scar is injected a number of times to reduce any swelling and flatten it. Steroid-impregnated tape can also be used to try to flatten keloid scars. With regard to microneedling, our doctor will use the dermapen device to produce thousands of micro-medical needle-columns in the skin. Each column will penetrate into the skin. The column will close rapidly within 24 hours. The procedure takes about 20 – 30 minutes.

After the Treatment

With regard to cortisone injections, you should avoid applying to makeup or any products on your skin for the next 6-8 hours to avoid infection. With regard to microneedling, you should avoid touching or applying make up for 48 hours after treatment to let the skin heal and to prevent infection. Your doctor may apply a post-treatment product after the procedure to help soothe and calm the skin. Protecting your skin from the sun is very important after these treatments. Specific post-procedure care instructions will be given to you on the day of your visit.

Results

With regard to cortisone injections, depending on the type of scar, the injections may need to be repeated. Injections are usually given on three occasions, four to six weeks apart, to assess your body’s response. Treatment may continue for several months if the scar is improving. Results are longterm.

After the Dermapen procedure, your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface, in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen is formed, new skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced. 48 to 72 hours following the dermapen application, you will have an increase in collagen production. It can take up to 4-6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long-lasting result. The number of treatments required varies per person response and condition being treated. As a general guideline, 4-6 treatments are required, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The results are truly long lasting for up to 2 years.
