Verrucas/warts can be treated with various methods including topical treatments or cryotherapy (freezing the skin with liquid nitrogen spray). Both cryotherapy and diathermy are well-tolerated treatments. Following cryotherapy, any redness, swelling, blistering or discomfort will settle after 2-3 days and the area treated will scab and eventually fall off. Treatment may be repeated after 2-3 weeks if further work is required. Larger lesions usually require several treatments of freezing.
Following diathermy, the wound can take up to 6 weeks to heal and can leave a scar. This works in most cases, however please note that 20% of warts return within a few months, so repeat treatments are sometimes required.
